Translating to ‘turtle’ in Bahasa Indonesian (an ancient symbol of the spiritual ground of the universe), Kura Kura emanates an innate spirituality, that naturally induces relaxation without the bells and whistles.
The intimate retreat offers yoga and wellbeing experiences to yogis and Zen-seeking travellers, and CompareRetreats.com is checking in for a bit of R&R….
Situated along a small river a mere 50 steps from the beach, Kura Kura is in the quiet Balinese village of Seseh. Surrounded by lush rice fields and neighbouring a traditional Balinese temple, the retreat is only 20 minutes from Seminyak and walking distance from popular local surf spot, Echo Beach. The perfect place to escape the stresses of everyday life, it’s verdant surroundings will immediately put you in tropical holiday mode.
Originally built as a family house, the retreat is home to six quaint Java-style cottages. Divided into seven guest rooms and a ‘teacher’s room’, each space fits twin beds and can accommodate up to 16 people in total. All rooms have elegant simplicity and are equipped with an ensuite bathroom, tasteful decorations and hardwood floors. Most of the rooms are built around the pool which has a communal deck perfect for lounging, although the heart of the retreat is its yoga shala. Based on the definition of yoga (which means ‘union’), Kura Kura supports a community environment and feels like a relaxed home-away-from-home.
Serving delicious vegetarian meals, the meals at Kura Kura are all plant-based and health focused. Lovingly prepared by the retreat’s Balinese chef, dishes include colourful salads, hearty soups, flavoursome vegetable creations and traditional Indonesian favourites. Cooking workshops are also offered to those interested in honing their culinary skills.
Less is more at Kura Kura, so although the retreat doesn’t have a dedicated spa, it has a beautiful yoga shala and a lovely pool to swim in. The programme revolves around the yoga schedule, which offers classes twice-daily. The tranquil environment makes the retreat an ideal place to unwind and meditate, and many of the programmes include meditation instruction.
Expect to feel…in harmony with the peaceful environment and lapping waves that are the retreat’s continual background soundtrack.
