Regarded as one of Switzerland’s best wellness hotels, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is a medical health centre and therapeutic thermal spa providing clinical and holistic health services in a luxury resort setting. The resort is built around the Tamina Gorge hot spring, a natural thermal water flow which runs at 36.5 degrees and was first discovered in 1242. The spa town of Ragaz was established in the 1800s, when the water was first channelled through a pipe to the town—spawning one of the world’s best residential wellness and medical centres. Compare Retreats explores this historical hotel and its thermal water programmes.
Location
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is located in the Swiss countryside, approximately one hour from Zurich International Airport. Surrounded by scenic mountains, the colossal resort grounds are situated between the Rhine and the Alps, giving guests a quintessential Alpine experience.
Accommodation
Sprawling over the grounds of two hotels (the Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz and the Grand Hotel Quellenhof & Spa Suites), Grand Resort Bad Ragaz’s epic facilities form one giant luxury resort experience.
The Spa Suites are divided into six categories: ‘Spa Loft’, ‘Spa Loft Superior’, ‘Spa Loft Deluxe’, ‘Spa Suite’, ‘Presidential Suite’, and ‘Penthouse Suite’. Equipped with modern amenities, all rooms embody classic elegance while embracing contemporary design.
All suites have parquet flooring, oversized beds (equipped with high-tech ’Air Touch’ sleeping systems), floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces that overlook the surrounding vineyards and mountains beyond. They also have space-age bathrooms with whirlpool baths, steam showers and sauna cabins that all use healing thermal water.
The resort features two swimming pools—indoor and outdoor—along with extensive water, fitness, salon, and medical facilities. Guests can visit nearby vineyards, golf courses and ski slopes if they’re looking for active off-site activities, too.
Food Programme
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is home to seven (yes, seven!) restaurants. All palettes are catered to including those craving Japanese specialities, Mediterranean meals, Asian favourites, Swiss classics and regional European dishes.
The resort has its own signature culinary health brand, ‘Cuisine Équilibrée’ which caters specifically to detoxing guests or those on weight loss or healthy diet programmes. Created by head chef, Renato Wüst, and approved by the doctors and nutritionists in the resort’s medical centre, the healthy cuisine menu supports an alkaline diet that ensures a balanced daily intake of proteins carbohydrates and fats. Personalised nutritional counselling is also available at the resort’s medical centre.
Treatment Programme
Home to Switzerland’s largest spa (a whopping 80,000-square-foot facility) and a huge medical health centre, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz’s treatment programme is diverse.
The medical centre has over a dozen departments which include everything from plastic surgery to neurology to psychotherapy and even dental health. Meanwhile, the ‘36.5° Wellbeing & Thermal Spa’ offers two individually-tailored bathing programmes—‘Body Adaptation’ and ‘Body in Balance’—along with a huge range of thalassotherapy treatments, beauty rituals and holistic healing therapies.
The spa also has a range of wellbeing packages under its ‘Thermal Water Collection’, including ‘Vitality’, ‘Therapeutic Relaxation’, ‘Balance’ and ‘Work It Out’ programmes, all geared towards restoring equilibrium and vivacity in mind, body and spirit.
Results
Expect to feel like you’ve stumbled upon a healing oasis of water to bask in. The resort has year-round appeal with spectacular sunny summers, while winters transform the hotel into snowy-chateau wonderland. Programmes are relaxed enough that you can enjoy a healthy holiday here without feeling you’ve missed out, or indulge in a full retreat experience while your partner, friends or family who are less inclined towards a wellness holiday find plenty to occupy themselves, too.
Insider Tip
Only two of the seven restaurants serve the ‘Cuisine Équilibrée’ healthy menu, so if you want to avoid gastronomic temptation, make sure you head to ‘Olives d’Or’ or ‘Bel-Air’.
