One of Sri Lanka’s pioneering wellness retreats, Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort offers authentic Ayurvedic experiences in a luxurious seaside setting. On the southern coast in Weligama, the resort is close to the historic fort town of Galle and the beautiful Lake Koggala, providing an excellent base for exploring Sri Lanka, and your own mind, body and soul.
Location
Situated beachside, Barberyn Resort’s idyllic coastal setting adds to its tropical appeal. Located in Weligama approximately two hour’s drive from Sri Lanka’s Colombo Airport, the retreat is surrounded by lush foliage and overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Accommodation
The accommodation at Barberyn falls under three categories: Deluxe Studio Rooms (452 square feet); Deluxe Rooms (400 square feet) and Standard Rooms (300 square feet). All rooms have four-poster beds, ocean-facing balconies and ensuites. Decorated sparsely in natural tones, each suite is bright and airy with high ceilings and spacious lounge areas.
Food Programme
Wholesome and delicious, the food at Barberyn supports the resort’s Ayurvedic programme. Offering a buffet selection at set times, the kitchen serves up tropical fresh fruit, herbal tea, yoghurt, congee, green soup, yams and fresh juices for breakfast; a range of organic vegetables, fresh fish, fruit and curd for lunch; and soup and a selection of regional vegetarian Ayurvedic dishes such as red rice string ‘hoppers’ (rice noodles) with dahl, stir-fried green beans, jackfruit curry and devilled kankun (water spinach) for dinner. The kitchen also offers Ayurvedic cooking classes to guests who want to re-create the resort’s dining experience home.
Treatment Programme
Executed in its Ayurvedic Health Centre, the wellness programme at Barberyn revolves around traditional eastern treatments and holistic therapies that bring guests back into physical, mental and spiritual balance. Beginning with a thorough consultation with one of the resort’s resident doctors, each ‘Panchakarma’ (detoxification) programme starts with a purification prescription of Ayurvedic spa treatments (including massage, steams, soaks and scrubs) and ‘medicine’ in the form of herbal tinctures and tonics. Those seeking deeper internal cleansing can also try ‘Virechana Karma’ (purgation therapy) and ‘Vasti Karma’ (medicated enema therapy). Barberyn also hosts regular 10-day yoga and meditation retreats with various international teachers.
