After the inaugural retreat in June 2019, ROAR Africa is back for a second year with its six-day Women’s Empowerment Retreat on June 19 to 24, 2020. Designed as an inspiring journey of self-discovery, the Roar & Restore programme includes talks from women leaders, wellness activities and local excursions to explore Kenya’s culture and natural landscape. Featured in Travel+Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler, the innaugural 2019 retreat garnered a lot of positive attention, and this year is set to be even bigger. Curating a set up unique experiences not available on the regular tourist track, and this year includes experiences such as a visit to Wanjira Maathai’s tree planting project, an outing with the female anti-poaching unit (The Zeitz Foundation), a trip to the Satubo ladies beading center, and a game drive, along with talks and wellness sessions.

Wellness activities include yoga, herbal plant talk, and massages at Segara’s wellness spa, including yoga sessions with Compare Retreats Expert and experienced yogainstructor Mary Tilson.

The programme provides both an international lens and local cultural insights: the programme is peppered with local and international thought leaders, with women from the African community take an active role in leading retreat programme activities which are designed to give those from vulnerable communities more opportunities in the growing economy.

Speakers include Wanjira Maathai, director of International Affairs at the Green Belt Movement (GBM); ethno-botanist Anne Powys, a volunteer and trustee of The Suyian Trust; Dr. Jackie Chimhanzi, CEO of the African Leadership Institute and one of Forbe’s Africa’s 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa 2012; and zoologist Dr. Lucy King, head of the Human-Elephant Co-Existence Programme for the research charity Save The Elephants.

Capped at 16 places for an intimate experience, the retreat programme takes place over three luxury locations, and includes two nights of accommodation at in Nairboi at Hemingway’s Nairobi, a five-star hotel in the city’s tranquil outskirts (18-20 June); three nights in Laikipia Country at the Roar & Restore Segara Lodge, nestled between Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley (20-23 June); and one night at Tsavo East National Park at Galdessa Safari Camp, the largest and oldest in Kenya (23 June).

Better yet, the retreat has tangible results, as exemplified by last year’s programme: The Pussy Cat Foundation offered two grants to project participants of the Women’s Empowerment Retreat, the Elephants & Bees Project and the Girls College of Tourism; Dr. Lucy King was invited to speak at TEDWOMEN; female guides have sought out recommendations for women-friendly lodges and Roar Africa’s connections have provided work for the local community; and more lodges are now following Roar Africa’s example and employing women in prominent roles and front-of-house jobs in lodges, which was previously not done before.
