Rafael Nadal’s Hotel Brand Is Quietly Rewriting The Rules Of Wellness Travel

Rafael Nadal knows plenty about recovery. Two decades of tennis at the highest level will teach a person exactly how the body needs to move, rest, and rebuild between one brutal match and the next. He’s now applying that education to hotels.

Zel, the wellness-focused brand he co-created with Meliá Hotels International—Spain’s largest hotel group, also born in Nadal’s home island of Mallorca—opened its first property in 2023. Four years later, it’s grown well beyond a single flagship trading on a famous name. The collection now spans Spain, the Canary Islands, and the Caribbean, with several new openings landing in 2026 alone, and it’s become one of the more interesting brands to watch in wellness hospitality.

The Philosophy: Active Wellness, Mediterranean Rules

“Born in the Med” is Zel’s own shorthand for what it’s trying to do. The brand’s core idea is a balance between active wellness and genuinely switching off—a hotel that nudges guests toward movement and connection while also giving them full permission to do nothing at all.

That philosophy shows up in the architecture. There’s no traditional check-in desk—guests are welcomed into “The House of Zel,” a living-room-style entrance with a record player and a communal fridge they’re invited to open themselves, more like arriving at a friend’s place than a hotel. At the centre of every property sits The Patio, part lobby, part café, part social hub, built to make people stay a while rather than pass through.

Where the Collection Stands Now

The rollout has moved fast. Zel Mallorca, the flagship, opened on Palmanova beach in 2023. Zel Costa Brava followed in 2024, on the coast at Cala Giverola. The brand’s first move outside Spain came with Zel Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic—soft-opened in December 2024, with an official grand opening the following March. Zel Fuerteventura opened in May 2026 inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the Canary Islands’ windsurfing coast, and a Menorca property now rounds out the current portfolio. Coming next: a reimagined Zel Madrid on the Gran Vía, a Zel Crete overlooking the Aegean, and an all-inclusive Zel Cozumel opening this autumn, with a further hotel in Vlore, Albania, also in the works. The brand’s original goal of more than twenty hotels within five years is, so far, on pace.

What the Wellness Actually Looks Like

Wellness at Zel isn’t handed to guests as a programme to follow—it’s built into how the hotel functions. Every property is anchored by a spa or wellness studio, several branded AUA, typically with a heated pool, sauna, steam room, and a full menu of massages, facials, and body treatments, plus a proper gym and studios for group or private training. At Zel Costa Brava, guests can choose from 46 different sports, everything from tennis and padel to Nordic walking, cycling, and water polo in a semi-Olympic pool.

The social side of that wellness runs through Zel Club, the brand’s in-house platform for movement and connection: swimming circuits, group runs, yoga and meditation, cooking classes, and curated weekend retreats and festivals, some shaped directly by Nadal’s own recommendations. At Zel Punta Cana, that’s grown into a rotating Fitness Residency of running sessions and pilates classes open to hotel guests and locals, plus ice baths, paddleboard yoga, and catamaran trips during launch events.

The Verdict

What makes Zel worth paying attention to isn’t really the champion’s name above the door. It’s the bet the brand has made on what wellness travellers actually want now: not a silent retreat, but a hotel that treats movement, food, and community as part of the same equation as a spa treatment. Three years in, strong occupancy and rate growth at the Mallorca flagship suggest that bet has paid off. With Madrid, Crete, and Cozumel all opening within the year, Zel looks set to become one of the more significant wellness-hospitality brands of the decade—not because it’s new, but because it hasn’t stopped growing.
