Perhaps it’s the vibrant tropical gardens or the warm welcome you receive, but Satsanga India is bursting with colour from the moment you step over the threshold. Offering an array of yoga retreats, workshops, yoga teacher training courses and yoga holidays, this family-run centre and guest house in Goa is open seasonally, from October to May. We check in for a week of yoga in this rainbow retreat.

Location

Situated in the village of Verla Canca, Satsanga is located between Anjuna Beach and Mapusa in Goa, India. The retreat is approximately one hour from Goa’s Dabolim Airport and is surrounded by tropical gardens.

Accommodation

Priding itself on providing guests with a ‘home-away-from-home’, Satsanga has 15 simple guest rooms. Warmly furnished and equipped with private bathrooms, these somewhat-basic quarters are ideal for yogis travelling on a budget.

Satsanga isn’t a five-star resort, so ceiling fans replace air conditioning and amenities are minimal. That said, the retreat’s relaxed atmosphere is contagious and makes up for the lack of fluffy trimmings.

Along with two beautiful, wood-floored yoga shalas, Satsanga has a swimming pool and intimate community living area where guests gather to lounge and drink tea.

Food Programme

Satsanga serves vegetarian meals made with fresh local produce. Sourced from the nearby markets each day, ingredients are seasonal and organic where possible. Locally grown and organic foods are used whenever possible.

A buffet of tropical fruits, muesli, yoghurt and oatmeal is typical for breakfast, while lunch and dinner meals consist of lovingly prepared traditional Indian and Ayurvedic dishes.

Treatment Programme

Satsanga has a strong yoga focus and offers a variety of yoga retreats and training, along with a small selection of rejuvenating spa therapies. The retreat hosts an array of respected international teachers who lead small groups through seven to 14-day immersion programmes. Covering every style from Ashtanga to Hatha and Iyengar, yoga devotees of all disciplines are well taken care of. Traditional restorative Ayurvedic therapies such as ‘Abhyanga’ (warm oil massage) and ‘Shirodhara’ (warm oil forehead flow) are offered in the retreat’s small spa, along with basic spa treatments such as pedicures, manicures, facials and waxing.
